Beehive workspaces

The CircHive BeeHive is a community of private and public sector organisations using biodiversity footprinting and natural capital accounting methods to protect ecosystems, enhance biodiversity and unlock new opportunities.

The BeeHive is focused around five sectoral hubs: Food, biomaterials, retailers, investors, green cities. Join the hub most relevant to you to discover networking and engaging opportunities and connect with like-minded businesses and public sector organisations.

In the BeeHive workspace hub we’ll be sharing the resources and outputs the CircHive project is creating. Explore the workspace hub to be the first to access and contribute to CircHive’s outputs.

Mainstreaming biodiversity in ESG: review of disclosure requirements

The EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requires companies to disclose biodiversity-relevant business information under its European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). In parallel, a range of established or new disclosure standards are incorporating biodiversity, namely Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN), Task-Force for Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Partnership for Biodiversity Accounting for Financials (PBAF), and CDP. Corporate biodiversity reporting is gaining prominence, but there is still little established market practice and little clarity on how exactly companies are to navigate this evolving reporting landscape n a way that is consistent with both EU requirements, and with biodiversity best practices.

Under CircHive, we aim to review the wide range of current and upcoming reporting standards in order to develop recommendations for a corporate biodiversity reporting journey, outlining how companies can build on existing and upcoming market standards in a way that is consistent with EU requirements under the CSRD. At the same time, though the reporting landscape is developing quickly, there is still no sufficient clarity for what is good enough in terms of reporting. Under CircHive, we will outline best practice reporting recommendations, closely following the development of relevant standards. The results of this task aim to enhance the uptake of corporate biodiversity reporting by providing guidance and clarity on what to report, how to report, and what reporting is good enough for sound biodiversity management.

What is a beehive?

A beehive is an enclosed structure in which some honey bee species of the subgenus Apis live and raise their young. Though the word beehive is used to describe the nest of any bee colony, scientific and professional literature distinguishes nest from hive. Nest is used to discuss colonies that house themselves in natural or artificial cavities or are hanging and exposed. The term hive is used to describe an artificial/man-made structure to house a honey bee nest. Several species of Apis live in colonies.

But for honey production, the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) are the main species kept in hives.[1][2]

  • The nest's internal structure is a densely packed group of hexagonal prismatic cells made of beeswax, called a honeycomb. The bees use the cells to store food (honey and pollen) and to house the brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae).
  • Beehives serve several purposes. These include the production of honey, pollination of nearby crops, housing supply bees for apitherapy treatment, and trying to mitigate the effects of colony collapse disorder. In America, hives are commonly transported so bees can pollinate crops elsewhere.[3] Several patents have been issued for beehive designs.

Nature-based Solutions and climate

Nature-based solutions refer to a suite of actions or policies that harness the power of nature to address some of our most pressing societal challenges, such as threats to water security, rising risk of disasters, or climate change.

These solutions involve protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems in ways that increase their resiliency and ability to address those societal challenges, while also safeguarding biodiversity and improving human wellbeing.

Take mangroves, for example. Mangrove forests along coastlines are not only important for sustaining fisheries but also for providing protective natural barriers against erosion and strong storms. They filter water, provide valuable timber and food resources to coastal communities, and can store huge amounts of carbon. Conserving and restoring these ecosystems benefits people in coastal communities by reducing vulnerabilities and increasing their resilience to the effects of climate change.

In short, nature-based solutions can be a win-win for people and nature.

Webinar: Biodiversity requirements in the food sector

How to fulfill the future biodiversity reporting requirements in the food sector?

The loss of biodiversity is one of the biggest challenges of our time. Many ecosystems that provide us with essential resources are at risk of collapsing. At the same time, biodiversity reporting is now mandatory for the food sector.

This event by the CircHive BEEHive (Biodiversity Excellence of Enterprises) community explained the current requirements related to biodiversity reporting and showcased practical tools to measure and manage nature issues at the farm and value chain level. We also had the chance to learn from the experience of two companies - Barilla and Valio.

Agenda:

-       Introduction of the CircHive project

-       Reporting requirements in the food sector

-       Practical tools at the farm level

-       Company case studies from Valio and Barilla

-       Q&A and discussion
